Williams Set to Make History with 'Serena Slam'

Serena Williams Expected To Join Other Legendary Women

The "Serena Slam" continues. 

If Williams were to win this year's US Open women's title, it would make it her fourth straight US Open win -- giving her a calendar-year Grand Slam, which was was last attained by Steffi Graf in 1988. As far as Willams is concerned, the pressure isn't on.

"I just want to play tennis. I don't necessarily want to hear about this history and that history, because I just want to be able to do the best that I can. I want to be able to win and I don't want any distractions. That's how I'm going to handle it," Williams told Yahoo Sports. That's her recipe for excelling, she just plays tennis. It helps that she's a monster at it. Williams won her first Grand Slam singles when she was just seventeen at the 1999 US Open. She was coached by her dad Richard, and she practiced with her older sister Venus, a seven-time champion. 

Today marks the first match in New York, and the Williams-led lineup has already sold out. To keep herself in check, Williams says, "I compete a lot against my standards. I have such high standards for myself and I expect the best from and nothing else."

Williams is living the dream, and age is just a number to her, "I really don't feel my age. It's gratifying at whatever age you achieve it." At 33, Williams is the oldest women's world champion. She is three Slam singles short of meeting Australian Margaret Court's overall record, and she would take part in an extraordinary Slam calendar year with Graf, Court, Maureen, Connolly, Don Budge, and Rod Laver, that's if she wins at the US Open. Williams is just short of Steffi Graf's Open Era career-holding record of 22 titles. Graf Tweeted that Serena's accomplishments are "incredible."

From Russia With Glove: Putin Posts Terrible Workout Video

Every fitness guy knows the laws of the gym. Don't curl in the squat rack, never skip leg day, and ALWAYS focus on form. That last bit is especially important if you're going to share a workout video with others (for showoff purposes). If you commit a fitness felony, you suffer the consequences: enter Vladimir Putin. The president of Russia took a break from posting questionable shirtless selfies to give us a glimpse of how he and his prime minister Dmitry Medvedev build their political pecs.

M&F Deputy Editor Matt Tuthill had some scathing critiques, saying Putin is "Russian" (sorry, had to do it) his cable work.

"His cable crossover form is crap," Tuthill says. "[That's] weird because it's such an easy exercise. His reps are fast and bouncy. That exercise is all about getting a good contraction, and it doesn't look like he's getting any. Meanwhile, the prime minister [Medvedev] is doing some legit pullups. It's telling that we only see Putin doing lat pulldowns. Whenever two guys are working back and it's time for pullups, the weaker guy always opts for pulldowns."

U.S. Women’s Relay Team Strikes a Pose Before Championships

Before the U.S. Women’s 4x400-meter relay team competed in the world championships in Beijing this weekend, they charmed the crowd by striking a Charlie’s Angels pose.

Before running their relay, Sanya Richards-Ross, Allyson Felix, Natasha Hastings, and Francena McCorory demonstrated confidence as they entered the arena, and photographer Patrick Smith from Getty Images captured the moment.

The U.S. women’s relay team took silver for the second straight time at the worlds, losing time with a hesitant baton handover. Jamaica defeated the men’s and women’s American teams, taking its seventh gold medal and denying Allyson Felix a 10th world title, according to ESPN.com.
